I like to try and start off each month by sharing a spiritual message of some sort. As many of you may know, I am LDS (mormon). One of the biggest reasons I like to blog is to have an opportunity (when it arises) to share my testimony with others. During the Christmas season, it seems like that opportunity comes up more often.
It can be super super hard to remember the reason for the season. Having just got back from some Black Friday shopping, I can attest to this fact. Christmas is often more about the gifts than about the Savior and His birth. This year, I am trying to remember the Savior a little more by reading the Book of Mormon, cover to cover, in 40 days. I am also trying hard to simplify things so that I and my family don’t get caught up in the commercialized aspect of Christmas. I am trying to take the opportunities to talk about Jesus with my kids and teach them who He was and what He wants us to be.
Quick story. One time, about two months ago, we were having family night. Our kids are young. My oldest was not quite 2 and a half and my youngest was not quite one and a half during this particular family night. Because they are little and their attention spans are short, I generally make up some little lesson on the spot. That particular lesson, we talked about Jesus, pointed to the picture of Him on the wall, and I said “Jesus wants us to be nice.” That was the extent of the lesson.
Fast forward two weeks. We’re having another family night. Another lesson not planned. I point to the picture of Christ and say to my son, “Who is that?” “Jesus” he replies. Then, without hesitating he says “Jesus says be nice!” I was amazed that he caught on so quickly to this concept and that he was able to remember what we had taught him. Now, every time him and his sister are fighting he says “hey! Jesus says to be nice!” I know it’s a little thing, but kids CAN learn super early and it’s never too early to start teaching them.
Anyway, back to the point. Remember Christ this year. Talk with your family about what you can do to make Christ the center of your homes, not only for Christmas, but for the whole year.
For those of you who don’t know, I belong to a group of bloggers called the Book of Mormon bloggers. We are basically a group of women bloggers who have agreed to provide a Book of Mormon to anybody who asks for one, free of charge. If that is something you are interested in, please contact me at email@example.com and I will get one sent to you right away. No questions asked. And no, I’m not going to sic the missionaries on you (unless you want me to).
Please enjoy this short video about keeping Christ in Christmas. And please check out these posts by other bloggers who would like to share a spiritual message with you today:
