I came down with a nasty cough this weekend. And I was excited. Why? Because last time I was visiting my parents, I found an old ward cookbook. The cookbook was gold. It had amazing recipes in it. And, in the back, there was a section of miscellaneous “recipes” that weren’t actually food recipes. They were things like homemade cleaner, artificial snow, bubble bath soap, spray and wash, and this gem: All Natural Homemade Cough Remedy. So, since I had a cough, I decided I would try it out.
I have to admit, I was nervous at first. The recipe calls for ginger, cayenne pepper, vinegar, honey, and water. A few of those things (cayenne pepper, ginger, vinegar) are things that I generally avoid. But, for the sake of blogging (and getting rid of my cough) I decided to give it a go.
I have to admit, it wasn’t horrible. At first, there was a pretty intense initial “bite”, but guess what? It worked. No more cough. No cough medicine that makes you so tired you can’t function. No artificial flavorings or anything like that. Just natural ingredients that you probably have in your cupboard already.
Are you ready for the recipe? Here it is!
All Natural Homemade Cough Remedy
1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
1 tablespoon honey
2 tablespoons hot water
1/4 teaspoon ginger
1 tablespoon vinegar
|Before I mixed it. I have to say, it doesn’t look as nasty as some cough medicine I’ve seen in a bottle before…
Mix it all together. The original directions say, “Drink it down real fast” (emphasis added… but you’re going to want to drink it fast). The directions also say that you can use it every 15 minutes, but I only did it once and I’m still good, three hours later.
|All mixed up. All those little flakes are the grated up ginger.
I used fresh ginger, because I had it on hand. If you do that, here’s a tip: Put the ginger in the freezer. It grates up way easier.
Did you try it? Did it work for you? Leave me a comment and let me know!
