I have to preface this post by saying, I sew, but I am not great at it, I am learning, but I say that to let you people like me out there know that this is a super simple sewing project. Doesn’t take long, gets you using a sewing machine, but nothing TOO tricky, and even for the beginner sewers, this is a simple and fun little project.
I have made a bunch of these for friends and family as teething necklaces, but my little lady is 18 months {and not teething} And she still loves her, plus, the satin is just lovely, so it can be used with a dress or something fancy!
I have also used cotton and flannel, but satin is just so stinking pretty, I use it the most!
Here is what you will need:
Satin Fabric 44-50 feet long {like I said, you can use pretty much any other kind of fabric, use scraps!}Package of wood beads { 1 inch or smaller} I like to use some of both in my necklaces
Ribbon {I used satin ribbon also}
Sewing Machine and coordinating thread
scissors
tea light or lighter {optional}
Directions!
First cut your fabric. 3.5 inches by 44-50 inches.
Then fold it hot dog style {hehe anyone else think like that still?} Fold it right sides together and sew with a 1/4 inch seam. And a second time with an 1/8 inch seam. If you want to be super sure do it a third and fourth time {I only did it twice on mine, this is a precaution so that the beads don’t come out}
Once you have finished that, turn your fabric inside out so that the shiny side is on the outside now. You can use a safety pin to make it a bit easier.
Then add one bead and tie a knot.
Continue that until you have it about the size that you would like, Knot, bead, knot, bead, etc. {make sure it is tight!} I ended up with eleven beads on mine, but make it your own! ![]()
Then I like to burn the edges of my necklaces {both ends} and the ends of my ribbon, so that they do not fray. This works best on satin fabric and ribbon.
Then Cut your Ribbon in half {to the length you desire!!}
And tie it on both ends. Pretty simple right? Seal them off with your lighter or tea light, and you’re done!
Pretty simple right!? Let me know if you have any questions/thoughts! ![]()
