How to take .blogspot out of your blog name

Posted on May 13 2013 - 2:00pm by Markell

This is my 101th post! Woohoo! I figured a good post for my number 101 would be one to help other bloggers to make their blog a little bit better. I am pretty sure that doing this one simple thing has helped my blog more than any other one thing I could do.

In life, you hear all the time the phrase “first impressions are everything”. When it comes blogging, that couldn’t be more true. The very first thing that people see about your blog is the website name. One thing that is sure to make the credibility of your website go down is a .blogspot in between your website name and the .com. No one likes typing all that extra stuff and it screams to the world “I am not serious about my site,” even though that may not be true at all. There are many companies that won’t work with you if you have that little tagline in your website name. It is definitely worth it to make this change.

A common misconception is that it is really hard to make this change. false. Another false belief is that it is expensive to do this. false again. It actually only costs $10 a year and it will literally take you about 10 minutes. You will not lose old traffic because blogger will forward all of your traffic to your new URL.

Step One:

On your blogger dashboard, click the settings button.

Step Two:

Click the “add custom domain” link.

Step Three:

Type your desired domain name into the box.

Step Four:

Check availability. If your domain name is available, move on to step four. If not, repeat step three and four until you find one that will work well.

Step Five:

Continue through the registration.

Step Six:

Fill in your information and click the I accept button on the bottom.

Pay the  $10 and you’re set! You now own the only thing you can own on the internet, your domain name!

Leave a comment if you used this tutorial so I can checkout your AWESOME new website name.

Seriously~this is genius….I am not sure why I don't explore more often, but it may have something to do with my age….so afraid I will mess something up! A .com is easier to remember any day of the week. Thanks!

Thanks so much for the post. I was literally just thinking about researching how to go about doing this! I went through all the steps and now it says it can take up to 24 hours for new domain to be up. Can't wait! Thanks again.

That's so cool! I've been thinking about doing this for a while, but my hubby and I are becoming missionaries, and so our .blogspot address is on all of our prayer cards right now…. Would doing this mean that nobody could find us from our prayer cards? If they type in .blogspot will they still get to my custom domain name site, or not? It's so important to us that our supporters can reach us, and keep up with us.

    Thanks!

I know right? And it makes a big difference in the "credibility" of your blog.

Way easier, right? And it makes your blog seem much more "professional" in my opinion.

That's so great! Congrats on taking that step! Your domain name is the only thing you can own on the internet, so you might as well, right?

Anyone trying to get to your website using the .blogspot address will get redirected to your new address. You can try it with mine. If you type in ” target=”_blank”>http://www.amouseinmykitchen.blogspot.com, it'll just redirect you to this website. So no lost traffic!

Markell I just found this on your blog and I wanted to check something with you. I think blogger has changed there stuff and you can't check the availability of your blog name without the blogspot added. Do you know of another way to get around this issue?

    • amouseinmykitchen November 26, 2013 at 9:17 am - Reply

I am not sure at all. My thought would be to start your blog with a .blogspot address then change it. If you're worried about the domain you want being available, type it into the search bar and see what comes up. Other than that, I don't really know! Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

If I were to take the .blogspot out of my domain name would that allow me to use Google adsense even though I haven't had my blog for 6 months yet? Thanks!
